CU BCL stages demo as local JL activists beat their leaders

Leaders and activists of Chittagong University unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League on Wednesday locked the university main gate and staged a demonstration following an attack on their leaders by local Juba League activists.

‘The BCL activists did not allow any teacher and staff buses to enter the university. They also did not let the university shuttle run since the morning,’ said a witness Shafiqur Rahman.

‘Around hundred BCL activists took positions at the CU main gate. They also set tyres on fire in front of the gate,’ he said.

CU BCL general secretary Iqbal Hossain Tipu told New Age that some local Juba League activists led by Md Hanif carried out an attack on BCL leader Pradip Chakraborty Durjoy and Md Rashed in the rail gate area on early Wednesday.

‘BCL activists and general students are protesting at the attack,’ he said.

‘We demand immediate arrest of the attackers,’ he said, adding that the protest would be continued till the problem was resolved.

The university authorities held a meeting with the BCL leaders over the incident.

CU proctor Rabiul Hasan Bhuiyan could not be reached for his comments regarding the situation.
