AL to accord grand reception to PM today
The ruling Awami League and its alliance partners and associate bodies will accord a ‘grand reception’ to the prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, today for receiving two international awards including the United Nations’ highest environmental honour ‘Champions of the Earth’.
The reception will be accorded to Hasina with people lining on the road from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport to her official residence Ganabhaban in the afternoon on her return home after attending the 70th session of the UN General Assembly in New York City.
Prime minister’s flight is scheduled for 1:30pm today to land at the airport.
Hasian received the Champions of the Earth Award in recognition of her outstanding leadership on the frontline of climate change and International Telecommunication Union’s ICTs in Sustainable Development Award for her contribution towards harnessing the potential of information and communication technologies for sustainable development in New York in the last week of September.
Hasina was the second Bangladeshi to receive the Champions of the Earth Award. In 2008, Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies executive director Atiq Rahman received the award for his outstanding contribution in raising awareness of the climate change issues.
Ruling party Awami League high-ups, holding a series of meetings, instructed the party lawmakers and grassroots leaders in Dhaka and its adjoining districts and leaders of associate bodies to mobilise maximum number of people at both sides of the road from the airport to Ganabhaban for the reception.
Awami League presidium member Mohammad Nasim, after a joint meeting with the leaders of professional organisations on Friday, said that the ruling alliance would set a history today by ensuring maximum participation in the reception.
Ruling party leaders and activists and local lawmakers in eight groups would take positions on the route from airport to Ganabhaban via Khilkhet, Kuril Flyover, Hotel Radisson, Kakali, Jahangir Gate and Rangs Bhaban.
