Protests at teacher murder, humiliation on

The Rapid Action Battalion arrested the prime accused in the college teacher Utpal Kumar Sarker murder case at Sreepur in Gazipur on Wednesday, four days after the teacher had been fatally beaten at Hazi Yunus Ali School and College in broad daylight.

Early on the day, the 16-year-old accused’s father, Uzzal Hossain, was also arrested in Kushtia and remanded into police custody for five days.

Legal and media wing director of the RAB Khandaker Al Moin confirmed the news and said that the prime accused of the case was a Class IX student of Haji Yunus Ali School and College at Chitrasail under Ashulia union of Savar upazila in Dhaka.

Utpal Kumar Sarkar, a political science teacher at Hazi Yunus Ali School and College, died at Savar Enam  Medical College and Hospital early Monday, two days after being beaten by the teenage schoolboy of the institution.

It was reported that the schoolboy had been admonished for stalking by Utpal, who was also the chairman of the disciplinary committee of the college.

Ashulia police station officer-in-charge SM Kamruzzaman said that the father of the accused had been arrested for helping the accused abscond.

The police produced Uzzal before the Dhaka Judicial Magistrate Court with a 10-day remand plea and the court granted five-day remand, said the court’s general recording officer sub-inspector Sheikh Mujahidul Islam.

The officer said that they found that the student had hit the teacher with his father’s support and he also helped his son escape. So he will be charged in the case, he added.

Haji Yunus Ali College principal Saiful Hasan said, ‘The police FIR suggests that the schoolboy is only 16-year-old. But as per the school documents, he is over 19-year-old as he was born on January 17, 2003.’

Different socio-cultural groups, teachers, students and activists, meanwhile, continued their protests demanding justice over the murder of Utpal and the humiliation of another teacher in Narail and urged the government to address the incidents.

On June 18, teacher Swapan Kumar Biswas was assaulted and humiliated in Narail over allegations of communal provocation. The teacher was shamed by some forcing him to wear a shoe garland.

New Age Dhaka University correspondent reported that different student organisations, including the Chhatra Odhikar Parishad and the Student Federation of Bangladesh, held protest rallies protesting at the teacher’s humiliation in Narail and demanding exemplary punishment of those involved in Utpal’s murder.

Five students of different educational institutions, including Dhaka University, sat for a hunger strike with the same demand at the Raju Anti-terrorism Memorial.

Shamim Affan, a striker, said, ‘No action has been taken yet against the killer who is the main culprit of killing Utpal. I request the law enforcement agencies to arrest those culprits who were involved in the incident and give them exemplary punishment.’

Home minister Asaduzzaman Khan said that investigation continued to identify the people negligent during the humiliation of the teacher in Narail.

The home minister made the statement after a meeting at the secretariat on Wednesday.

In a press statement, Ganasamhati Andolan chief coordinator Zonayed Saki and executive coordinator Abul Hasan Rubel said that the government and administration’s failure and instigation played major roles in the teachers’ murder and humiliation.

The Bangladesh Udichi Shilpi Gosthi in another press statement demanded identification and exemplary punishment of the people responsible for the humiliation.

The Udichi also condemned the home minister’s statement, terming it irresponsible.
