Bangladesh sees mad rush of homebound people

Mad rush of homebound people were seen on Friday on roads, railways and waterways across Bangladesh ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.

A 20-km tailback has created on the Dhaka-Tangail-Bangabandhu bridge highway on the day due to a road accident and pause in toll collection.

Some trains, mostly on northern routes, ran late from two to four hours while a huge number of people were seen travelling on train roofs at Kamalapur rail station in Dhaka.

People towards south-western districts thronged on Paturia-Daluatdia ferry route where passengers on foot were seen crossing the river Padma through ferries.

People were also seen to crowd bus terminals in Dhaka and adjacent districts to get on buses.

A good number of people also left Dhaka by launches from Sadarghat since morning.

Covid rules in transport, terminals and stations were grossly violated as many were seen without wearing any masks.

The Eid-Ul-Azha is going to be celebrated on Sunday while the three-day vacation will start Saturday.

Mad rush of people started since Thursday which intensified on Friday due to weekly holiday.

New Age correspondent in Tangail reported that a 20km tailback had been created on Dhaka-Tangail- Bangabandhu Bridge Highway on Friday due to a road accident on the bridge that compelled the authorities to stop toll collection.

The traffic jam started since early morning on Friday from the eastern side of Bangabandhu Bridge to Rasurpur in Sadar upazila.

‘One person was killed in a collision involving a bus and a pickup van near pillar no 17 on the west side of the bridge. The bridge authorities stopped collecting tolls for one hour and 40 minutes. There is also the pressure of extra vehicles,’ Bangabandhu Bridge East Police Station officer-in-charge Shafiqul Islam confirmed the matter.

Dhaka bound cattle laden truck, however, are moving smoothly by the opposite lane of the highway.

Since morning, people crowded Kamalapur rail station in Dhaka in bid to celebrate Eid at their ancestral homes.

Defying action of Bangladesh Railway, many people got on train roofs.

‘We are struggling as many have been getting on train roofs violating our direction not to do so. They are travelling on roofs due to huge pressure,’ said the station master Afsar Uddin.

He also said some northern district-bound trains were late as these trains were coming in late to Dhaka.

Nilsagar Express on Dhaka-Chilahati and Drutajan Express on Panchagarh-Dhaka route ms ran around four hours behind schedule and Ekota Express on Dhaka-Panchagarh and Rangpur Express on Dhaka-Rangpur routes ran around two hours behind their schedules.

Since morning, a huge number of people started to come to Sadarghat launch terminal on their ways to southern districts.

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority joint director Alamgir Kabir said that 49 launches left Dhaka since morning.

This year, the launch journeys were smooth with no heavy overloading, he added.

New Age correspondent in Manikganj reported that huge people thronged to Paturia ferry ghat since morning.

Hundreds of people were seen crossing the river Padma by ferries.

Many people were seen travelling by goods-laden vehicles.
