Cricketer Shahadat sent to jail

A Dhaka court on Monday sent national cricketer Kazi Shahadat Hossain to jail rejecting his bail prayer in a case filed in connection with torture of his domestic help.
Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Mohammad Yusuf Hossain passed the order in the afternoon.
Earlier on the day, Shahadat surrendered to the court and applied for bail through his lawyer Kazi Mohammad Nazibullah Hiru around 10:30am.
On Sunday, another court sent Shahadat’s wife Jesmin Jahan Nritto to jail after rejecting her bail petition in the case.
Police arrested Nritto at Pabna Lane in the capital’s Malibagh early on the same day.
On September 7, metropolitan magistrate Waez Kuruni Khan Chowdhury took the FIR and set October 5 for submission of police report.
Journalist Khandaker Mojammel Hossain had filed the case against the couple with Mirpur Model Police Station under Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, 2000 on September 7 after rescuing Happy, 10.
Happy, daughter of Aroz Ali of Jamalpur, was rescued from Pallabi in the capital on September 6 with injuries in her body.
Being tortured, she managed to come out of Shahadat’s house in that morning and was rescued at night.
She gave her statement before a Dhaka court on September 21 where she narrated how she was tortured by the cricketer and his wife.
But soon after filing of the case, the couple had gone into hiding.
