Restaurant owner held over death of workers in Chawkbazar fire

Police detained the owner of Barishal Hotel and Restaurant, located in Old Dhaka’s Chawkbazar area where a fire broke out on Monday that killed six workers of the restaurant.

The owner of Barishal Hotel and Restaurant, Fakar Uddin, was detained in Keraniganj’s Subhadya area, said Abdul Kaiyum, officer-in-charge of Chawkbazar police station, on Tuesday.

He said that a case was under process to be filed over the incident.

At least six people were burnt to death as fire gutted a building housing a restaurant and a plastic toy warehouse in Old Dhaka’s Chawkbazar area on Monday afternoon.

The victims were all restaurant workers, who had been sleeping after finishing their night shift in a makeshift wooden structure inside the restaurant in Chawkbazar’s Kamalbagh area.

The Fire Service and Civil Defense director (operation) Lieutenant Colonel Zillur Rahman told reporters at the spot that there was no fire safety system at the building and its adjacent buildings.

‘These establishments are very dangerous,’ he said, adding that they would form a committee to probe the fire incident.
