Medical admission seekers call for strike at public universities
Medical and dental college admission seekers on Monday called for student strike in all public universities and medical colleges for Wednesday, demanding a fresh test for enrolling students in the MBBS and BDS courses and scraping the recently held test and ongoing admission process.
The student’s spokesperson Khaled Saifullah, at a press briefing at central Shaheed Minar said they would enforce strike on Wednesday in the institutions if their demands are not met by today.
They will also hold demonstration at Central Sheheed Minar today from 9:00am, he added.
Meanwhile, Progressive Student’s Alliance and Samrajyabad Birodhi Chhatra Oikya, left leaning student’s alliance, on Sunday at a press briefing at Shahbag threatened to enforce a daylong strike at all educational institutes on October 7 if the demand for cancelling the medical admission tests and arresting those involved in question papers leakage is not met by October 6.
Expressing solidarity with agitating students, they also brought out a procession on Monday starting at Madhur Canteen and ending at Central Shaheed Minar.
Earlier in the morning, around 50 students gathered at Shaheed Minar braving rain and chanted different slogans in favour of their demands.
The results of MBBS and BDS admissions tests, with a success rate of 58.4 per cent, were published on September 20, sparking protests by students and their parents alleging question leak.
Law enforcing agencies so far arrested a number of people including physicians of Rangpur Medical College Hospital and University Grants Commission official Omar Siraj in Dhaka on the charge of leaking questions of MBBS admission tests.
The suspended UGC assistant director Omar Siraj died in Rapid action Battalion custody on Thursday evening, while the family blamed custodial torture for the death.
Leaders and activists of Progressive Students Alliance, a platform of four left-leaning student bodies, on Monday protested the leak of medical and dental admission tests at Rajshahi University.
They also demanded cancellation of the admission test and retaking it with a fresh set of questions.
They also demanded exemplary punishment to the law enforcers who attacked students seeking cancellation of the admission test for question leak.
