Ansar members for personal security of Sylhet mayor withdrawn

The Ansar members deployed for personal security of Sylhet City Corporation mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury and his residence were withdrawn on Tuesday night.

Mayor Ariful, also central executive committee member of Bangladesh Nationalist Party, said on Wednesday that the security personnel were suddenly withdrawn at about 10:00pm without any prior notice.

‘The government will be responsible if any security crisis occurs,’ he warned.

The BNP leader told reporters that he was elected SCC mayor for two consecutive terms.

He said that the government had allocated two gunmen in the first term for his personal security but did not take any measure for his security in the next term that began in 2018.

Ariful said that it was the responsibility of the government to ensure his security.

He alleged that the mayors of other cities in Bangladesh were getting the facility but he was being deprived.

‘That was why, the SCC authority had appointed 23 Ansar members in exchange of specific salary and properly following the rules. Five of the appointed Ansar members were given charge for my home and personal security,’ he told reporters at the night.

‘The security members were withdrawn intentionally without any prior notice only to harass me ahead of the upcoming SCC election. I’m now feeling extreme insecure,’ Ariful alleged.

Ali Reza Rabbi, Sylhet district Commandant of Bangladesh Ansar and VDP, told New Age that the Ansar members were provided to the city corporation for ensuring security of its building.

But, five of the Ansar members were serving for personal security of the mayor and his residence though the Ansar members cannot be taken for home or personal security, he said.

Reza also said that he joined Sylhet recently and withdrew the Ansar members from the mayor’s residence as per the rules after he had come to know about the matter.

‘Now these Ansar members will only perform duties in the city corporation building,’ he added.
