Ex-ministers Asaduzzaman Noor, Mahbub Ali land in jail
A Dhaka magistrate court on Monday sent former cultural affairs minister Asaduzzaman Noor and former state minister for civil aviation and tourism Md Mahbub Ali to jail in a case filed over the death of hotel staff Siam Sarder in the capital’s Mirpur area during the quota reforms movement on July 18.
Magistrate Md Mosharrof Hossain passed the order after sub-inspector Abdur Rahman, also the investigation officer of the case, produced them before the court, seeking an order to send them to jail in connection with the case.
Earlier, the Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Asaduzzaman Noor from Nawratan Colony on Bailey Road at around 11:00pm on Sunday in connection with the murder case.
Noor, a prominent theatre activist, was a former Awami League lawmaker for Nilphamari-2 constituency. He assumed the role of minister of culture on January 12, 2014, following the AL victory in the 10th National Parliament elections held on January 5, 2013.
Besides, police arrested Mahbub Ali on Sunday from Segunbagicha in Dhaka in connection with the murder case. Mahbub Ali was elected lawmaker for the Awami League from Habiganj-2 twice, in 2014 and 2018.
On September 4, Sohag Sarder, father of the victim, filed the case with the Dhaka chief metropolitan magistrate court against 113 people, including a number of ministers of AL’s government.
Since the fall of the Awami League government in a student-led mass uprising on 5 August, at least 27 former ministers, members of parliament, and top leaders of Awami League have been arrested so far.
