July proclamation: Govt to discuss with political parties to prepare draft: CA press wing
The chief adviser’s press secretary, Shafiqul Alam, on Sunday said that the interim government would hold discussion with political parties soon to prepare the proclamation of the July uprising based on national consensus.
He came up with this in response to a question at a press conference at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka.
Earlier on December 30, Shafiqul Alam announced that the government would prepare the proclamation of the July uprising based on national consensus.
The announcement came when the Student Movement Against Discrimination declared December 31 for the proclamation of the July uprising.
Welcoming the government announcement, the students later refrained from announcing the proclamation on December 31. Instead, they held a ‘March for Unity’ programme at the Central Shaheed Minar, announcing January 15 as the deadline for the interim government to make the July uprising proclamation.
When asked about the January 15 deadline, Shafiqul Alam at the press conference said, ‘We had said that this proclamation will be made in a few days. Our work is ongoing.’
‘We have heard many things about the July proclamation. Discussions are underway, discussions will also be held with political parties, and some progress will be visible in the coming days,’ he said.
Asked when the discussion would be held with the political parties, he said that no specific date had yet been fixed for it.
Meanwhile, the Student Movement Against Discrimination and Jatiya Nagorik Committee on Saturday jointly announced ‘Proclamation Week’ in January 6–11, urging the interim government to formally proclaim the July Uprising by January 15.
When asked about deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s extradition, Shafiqul Alam at the press conference iterated his government’s commitment to bring back Hasina to face trial.
Nobody in the world wants to give space to any ‘killer’, he said, ‘it’s the nation’s desire (to get her back). We are very hopeful.’
He said, ‘We will try our best. She must face the trial. I think pressure will build on. Our relentless pressure will be there, and the pressure will be mobilised worldwide.’
The press secretary also said that they did not hear anything from the Indian side yet on Hasina’s extradition request.
‘It remains our top priority. We will not step back from this,’ he added.
Mentioning the probe in the journalist couple Sagur-Runi murder, he also said that the investigation over the murder was going on in full swing by a task force formed in November.
Noting that members of the Police Bureau of Investigation were working their level best, he said, ‘I hope that the PBI will be able to do something good over the probe.’
