SHOOTING AT SCHOOLBOY : MP seeks anticipatory bail

Ruling Awami League lawmaker Manjurul Islam Liton on Sunday petitioned the High Court for anticipatory bail in an attempted murder case filed against him for shooting at a minor boy in the legs in Gaibandha on October 2.
His lawyer Moksadul Islam told New Age that Manjurul sought pre-arrest bail in the High Court fearing that he might not get justice in the lower court as the media took the issue ‘emotionally.’
He filed the affidavit of his bail petition through his relative, said Moksadul.
The lawyer, however, said that he was not sure when Manjurul would surrender to the High Court seeking bail.
In the petition, Manjurul claimed that he came under attack by activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party BNP and the Jamaat-e-Islami on Bamandanga-Sundarganj road at BRAC intersection at Sundarganj while he was going to his village home from Gaibndha district town at about 4:00am on October 2.
He claimed that the allegation of shooting at the boy by him as stated in the first information report by the boy’s father was ‘blatant false’ and ‘fabricated’.
Attorney general Mahbubey Alam said that he received a copy of the petition from Manjurul’s lawyer and hoped that the matter might be moved in a High Court vacation bench on Monday as there was no such bench to deal with such matters on Sunday.
Manjurul, also the Sundarganj upazila Awami League president, filed the petition 72 hours after the home minister, Asaduzzaman Khan, told reporters on October 8 that the lawmaker was given time to surrender.
The minister said that legal actions would be taken if Manjurul did not surrender.
Manjurul went into hiding after the father of the victim filed the attempted murder case on October 3.
The victim, Shahadat Hossain Sourav, 9, son of Saju Miah of at Sundarganj, is undergoing treatment at paediatric surgery department at Rangpur Medical College hospital.
Saju, a farmer, said that he had already spent Tk 50,000 for the treatment of his son and now it became very difficult for him to bear the costs anymore.
