SHOOTING AT MINOR BOY : HC asks MP to surrender by Oct 18

The High Court on Monday asked ruling Awami League lawmaker Manjurul Islam Liton to surrender to the lower court by October 18 in an attempted murder case filed against him for shooting at a schoolboy in the legs in Gaibandha on October 2.
The vacation bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Bhisma Dev Chakravarty gave the time to Manjurul to surrender ejecting his petition seeking anticipatory bail in the case.
Manjurul surrendered to the High Court just few minutes ahead of the hearing in the petition.
The bench observed that it found no reason for granting him pre-arrest bail that was restricted by the Appellate Division.
Attorney general Mahbubey Alam said that the government would appeal to the Appellate Division vacation judge in chamber today for staying the High Court directive that asked Manjurul to surrender to the lower court by October 18.
Asked if police could arrest Manjurul before the deadline for his surrender, the attorney general said that the High Court directive would create confusion over Manjurul’s arrest and that was why the government would appeal against the High Court directive.
Manjurul, also the Sundarganj upazila Awami League president, went into hiding after the poor father of the victim filed the attempted murder case on October 3.
Manjurul filed the petition on Sunday, three days after the home minister, Asaduzzaman Khan, told reporters on October 8 that the lawmaker was given time to surrender.
The minister had said that legal actions would be taken if Manjurul did not surrender.
Manjurul told reporters on the High Court premises on Monday that he was free till October 18 and felt secure after the High Court gave him time to surrender before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Gaibandha.
He said he could not appear before the local court seeking bail as he felt insecure after he surrendered his two licensed guns to the local police station on October 3.
Manjurul also said that the present situation in the locality was not favourable to him to surrender to the lower court as locals led by the municipal mayor continued protests for his arrest.
Manjurul’s lawyer Moksadul Islam argued that he had came under attack by rivals on Bamandanga-Sundarganj road at BRAC intersection at Sundarganj while he was going to his village home from Gaibndha district town at about 4:00am on October 2.
The escaped from the attackers saving his life, said the lawyer.
The attorney general opposed the petition, saying that the High Court could not grant anticipatory bail or issue any directive in such type of sensation cases following Appellate Division’s guidelines.
The victim, Shahadat Hossain Sourav, 9, son of Saju Miah of at Sundarganj, is undergoing treatment at paediatric surgery department at Rangpur Medical College hospital.
