SCHOOLBOY SHOOTING : AL MP lands in jail

Ruling Awami League lawmaker Manjurul Islam Liton landed in jail on Thursday in two cases including one on charge of shooting a nine-year-old schoolboy in the legs in Gaibandha on October 2.
Gaibandha additional chief judicial magistrate Moinul Hasan Yousuf sent Manjurul, also the Sundarganj upazila Awami League president, to jail rejecting his petition for bail.
Manjurul’s defence lawyer Sirajul Islam told New Age that the lawmaker would go to higher court against the rejection of his bail prayer.
The police did not file any petition for remanding Manjurul in police custody for interrogation.
Sundargonj police station officer-in-charge (investigation) Mohammad Zinnat Ali, also the investigation officer of the case, said that he would file such a petition.
The lawmaker for Gainbandha-1 parliamentary constituency was also shown arrested in another case of vandalising and robbing a house at Sundargonj after shooting at the boy, court sources said.
A section of local Awami League men demonstrated in front of the deputy commissioner’s office demanding release of Manjurul claiming that he was innocent, New Age correspondent in Rangpur reported quoting witnesses and police.
Police charged batons and fired teargas shells to disperse the demonstrators who attacked the police when they were taking Manjurul to the court at about 11:30 from the police superintendent’s office, Gaibanda police station officer-in-charge Mehedi Hasan said.
No casualties were reported, he said.
He said that Manjurul was kept at the police superintendent’s office after he was taken to Gaibandha on early Thursday by a team of Detective Branch of police from Dhaka where he was arrested on Wednesday night.
Later the lawmaker was produced before the court amid tight security at about 11:45am and was sent to jail at about 1:30 pm, he said.
Gaibanda superintendent of police Ashraful Islam said that Manjurul had gone into hiding after he allegedly shot at Class-IV student Shahadat Hossain Saurav in BRAC intersection at Gopalcharan under Sundargonj upazila Gaibandha on October 2.
Shahadat’s father Saju Miah, a marginalised farmer, filed a case on October 3 accusing Manjurul of attempting to kill Shahadat.
Hafizar Rahman of Uttar Shahabaz village of Sundarganj filed the other case on October 8 accusing Manjurul and his associates of vandalising and robbing his house soon after shooting the boy.
Saju Miah, at Rangpur Medical College Hospital where the minor boy was undergoing treatment, expressed his satisfaction over Manjurul’s arrest and demanded exemplary punishment for him.
He expressed his utter helplessness saying that it became impossible for him to bear Shahadat’s treatment cost as he had already spent Tk 60,000 in the past two weeks.
Shahadat burst into tears as he was still unable to walk without assistance and had been passing time in hospital bed while his final examination was nearing.
Paediatric Surgery department head of the hospital Babul Kumar Shaha said that they were giving special attention to the child and the boy was improving gradually.
