JP will contest polls alone: Ershad

Chairman of the Jatiya Party, Hussain Mohammad Ershad, said in future the JP would contest the polls alone.
He asked the government to ensure free and fair polls in the upcoming Union Parishad to make it credible.
He was speaking at the party’s Kakrail office on the occasion of ‘Upazila Dibash’.
Chaired by presidium member, Abu Hossain Babla, others who spoke at the meeting included Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu, secretary-general of the party, party’s presidium member, Faisal Ahmed Chisty, Fakhrul Imam, MP, Saidul Islam, MP and Advocate Rezaul Karim Bhuiyan.
Ershad said JP would have to return to power if good governance was to be ensured.
He reminded the nation that the incumbent government was getting the benefit of the upazila system introduced by him, earlier.
He further said that if provinces were introduced then the country would gain even more, economically.
If a small country like Sri Lanka could have provinces why couldn’t we? He asked. ‘It is because of the upazila system that the country had attained self-sufficiency in food,’ he claimed.
Recalling the persecution of the Jatiya Party under BNP rule, he said, ‘It was divine retribution that BNP was facing a similar situation now.’
‘They are almost on the verge of extinction,’ he added.
