4 jailed, 22 held for fraudulence in the DU, JnU admission test

Mobile courts sentenced three admission aspirants, and another person for assisting them, to two years imprisonment each for fraudulence at the Dhaka University and Jagannath University admission tests on Friday.
Meanwhile, the Detective Branch of police arrested another 22 people in the capital Thursday night and Friday for taking part in admission test fradulence at DU and JnU, said university proctors.
A mobile court led by Nazma Nahad sentenced three students to jail for two years for using cell phones to cheat in the admission
test of ‘A’ unit at Jagannath University.
The culprits were identified as admission aspirants Masudur Rahman, Abdur Rahman and his cousin Kafil Uddin, a student of Tejgaon College.
University proctor Noor Mohammad said invigilators caught Masudur from the examination centre of City College and Abdur Rahman from Jagannath University centre.
Another person, Kafil, was arrested when he came to rescue Abdur. Kafil later confessed that he asked Hasan Mahmud, a student of Dhaka University, to help his cousin Abdur in the examination hall through the cell phone.
Hasan was supplying answers this afternoon during the examination.
Another mobile court led by Mousumi Mahabub on Friday sentenced an admission aspirant of DU Hasibul Islam Shanto to two years imprisonment over using an electronic device during the admission at Mohammadpur Model School and College, said DU assistant proctor Fazlur Rahman.
Fazlur Rahman said Hasibul was using an electronic device at the exam hall to get answers from outside.
Meanwhile, DB police arrested 22 people in connection with distribution of fake question papers of DU and JnU admission tests on Thursday night and Friday, said university proctor offices.
DB police arrested 12 people from Tejturi Bazar area of Tejgaon in connection with distribution of DU question papers  and 10 from Tantibazar area of old Dhaka, while distributing JnU admission test papers.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner Muntasirul Islam, confirming the news, said that DB arrested the culprits on a tip-off.
The admission test of both universities’ A unit under the science faculty for the academic session 2015-2016 were held on Friday. DU admission test was held in the morning while JnU test in the afternoon at different centers across the capital.
This year a total of 71,000 students took part in the exam against 1,660 seats at DU and 57,700 students took part in the exam against 760 seats at JnU, admission offices of universities said.
DU proctor Amzad Ali at a press briefing said that the DU admission test was held in a peaceful manner and the perpetrators failed to leak the question papers.
On October 16, one admission aspirant was imprisoned for a year for duplicating the admit card of the C unit admission test.
Admission coaching centres are reportedly in question leak and forgery in admission tests but there is no visible government initiative of putting a ban on their illegal activities.
DU vice-chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique said coaching centres are luring the students by giving false guarantees in admission tests, are engaged in question leak and others criminal activities.
‘We are hearing for many years that coaching centres would be banned but there is no visible step’ Arefin said.
Arefin and Directorate General of Health Service officials said that they found involvement of admission coaching centres in the allegation of question leak of medical admission test and forgery in admission test of Dhaka University.
DU proctor Amzad said that almost in every case they found involvement of coaching centres. Syndicates charge Tk 5 to 7 lakh for distribution of questions and helping them to finding answers in the tests.
He said that at least 25 people were arrested in 2014 for forgery in the admission tests of that year.
Rapid Action Battalion members on September 22 arrested seven people from Rangpur, including five coaching centre men, for their suspected involvement in the leaking of medical and dental admission test question papers.
