SHAMSHER’S RESIGNATION : Mixed reaction in BNP

Shamsher Mobin’s resignation of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party caused mixed reaction in the party, as senior leaders were indifferent to the matter and grassroots were critical of his decision.
BNP vice-chairman Shamsher on Thursday formally announced that he retired from politics and resigned from all posts of BNP citing health ground.
On October 28, he handed over a letter, addressed to BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, to this end to acting BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
BNP chairperson’s adviser Shamsuzzaman Dudu told New Age that he was not clear about the matter as the party chairperson was now in London and none could say whether Shamsher’s resignation was accepted by her.
Anyone can retire from politics on health ground, he said.
Replying to a query, Dudu said that Shamsher himself stated, as published in newspapers, that his resignation would not cause any such loss to a big party like BNP.
BNP standing committee member Mahbubur Rahman said that it was one’s fundamental right to resign from a party or to quit politics.
He said that Shamsher explained why he retired from politics and resigned from BNP.
He refrained from making any comment on impact of the matter on the party.
Another standing committee member Goyeshwar Chandra Roy said that he would not say that Shamsher’s resignation was good or bad.
He hoped that Shamsher would not keep him disconnected from the movement for restoration of democracy.
‘Shamsher Mobin’s decision to quit BNP at its critical time is not wise,’ said Narayenganj district BNP president Taimur Alam Khondoker.
He said that bureaucrats and businessmen in the party always used to enjoy comfortable position and opportunists and it was proved by Shamsher’s resignation.
Taimur, also BNP assistant law affairs secretary, said that Khaleda had been betrayed by those whom she placed in vital positions.
He said that the people by whom Khaleda was now surrounded would leave her at her critical time, but the dedicated leaders and activists would remain with her in any crisis.
Taimur said the party chairperson should take a lesson from the role of opportunist bureaucrats and businessmen and evaluate trusted and tested leaders and activists.
Khagrachhari district BNP president Abdul Wadud Bhuiyan said that Shamsher might resign from the party after some more days considering prevailing critical situation of the country.
He said that Shamsher had the right to quit BNP as he cited health ground, by the timing not perfect.
Wadud, also central executive member, claimed that grassroots were confused following sudden resignation of Shamsher that raised various questions among them.
He said some leaders and activists suspected that Shamsher was misguided by some quarters, some thought he was forced by the government and some speculated that he resigned out of fear.
He, however, said Shamsher’s resignation would not have any impact on the party.
Mirzapur upazila BNP president Abul Kalam Azad said that Shamsher’s resignation would put no impact on the party. Grassroots give no importance to the matter, he said.
