Nigerian forward Eleta Kingsley struck twice and set up another goal as hosts Chittagong Abahani came from behind to stun East Bengal by 3-1 and claim the Sheikh Kamal International Club Cup title in Chittagong on Friday.
Kingsley, who also scored two goals against Afghan champions De Spin Ghar Bazan in the semi-final, looked unstoppable from the beginning to entertain a sell-out 25,000 crowd present at the MA Aziz Stadium.
Thousand others, including prime minister Sheikh Hasina, glued to the television to watch the game that provided the finest hours for the football lovers of the port city.
Indian champions East Bengal started the final as favourites and justified the status with a lead in the 11th minute through Avinabo Bag, who saw his powerful drive from the edge of the box take a deflection off defender Rezaul Karim to enter the net.
Chittagong Abahani clawed their way back to grab the equaliser in the injury time of first half when Mithun Chowdhury lobbed inside the box from a counter attack to find Kingsley, who rose above his marker to head the ball home.
It gave the hosts their confidence back and they took little time to seize the initiative going into the lead with just nine minutes into the second half, thanks to Kingsley’s second goal.
Zahid took a low free-kick from the right corner of the box that found Mithun within the hand-shaking distance of East Bengal goalkeeper Dibyendu.
But Mithun could not connect the ball leaving and unmarked Kingsley to show his class once again as his powerful low drive found the back of the net much to the bewilderment of East Bengal defenders.
It took his tally in the tournament to five, making him the highest scorer ahead of team-mate Zahid, who has four goals to his name.
Kingsley chipped a cross from the left three minutes later to find Hemanta Vinsent, who jumped over goalkeeper Dibyedu to score the third goal for the hosts, sealing the contest.
East Bengal had won the corresponding fixture in the group stage 2-1.
