Law and order situation good: home minister
Home affairs minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Sunday claimed that the overall law and order situation of the country was ‘obviously good’ and Saturday’s attacks on publishers and bloggers were isolated incidents.
He said similar incidents happened in other countries too.
‘Yesterday’s attacks were isolated incidents and such attacks also occur in other countries of the world,’ Asaduzzaman said responding to reporters’ questions at the secretariat.
He said these attacks were being made to destablise the country.
The home minister made the remark a day after synchronised attacks on two publishers of slain blogger Avijit Roy in the city.
Unknown assailants on Saturday hacked Faisal Arefin Dipan of Jagriti Prokashani to death at his office in Aziz Super Market at Shahbagh and injured Shuddhoswar’s Ahmedur Rashid Tutul and bloggers Tareq Rahim and Ranadipam Basu in a separate attack at their workplace in Lalmatia.
Law minister Anisul Huq at a function in the city, however, assured of proper investigation into the incidents and speedy trial of the killers of publisher Faisal Arefin.
He said an expert team would be engaged in probing the publisher murder.
The so-called Ansar Al Islam at about 9pm tweeted claiming responsibility for the killing and attack on secular bloggers.
About Ansar Al Islam’s claim, Asaduzzaman said the anti-liberation force was behind such attacks in a bid to destablise the situation. ‘The ideology of Jamaat-Shibir and that of Ansar Al Islam or JMB or Ansarullah Bangla Team are all the same,’ he observed.
The minister said that the perpetrators would be brought to justice soon.
‘Suspects in all such recent incidents have already been identified and arrested. The perpetrators of the publisher attacks will also be tracked down soon,’ he said.
The minister called upon all concerned to install close-circuit cameras at all markets and other important establishments.
The murder of the publisher took place around a month after two foreigners were killed by unknown assailants in Dhaka and Rangpur.
Information minister Hasanul Haq Inu at a publication ceremony in the city called upon the writers and publishers not to be scared.
He asked them to continue their work.
The information minister made the call on Sunday at the publication ceremony of two books by expatriate writer Fahmida Hussain.
