Gayeshwar sent to jail
A Dhaka metropolitan sessions judge’s court on Wednesday sent Bangladesh Nationalist Party standing committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy to jail in connection with a violence case filed with Rampura police station.
Judge Md Kamrul Hossain Molla passed the order after rejecting a bail petition filed by the senior BNP leader.
Earlier, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy surrendered before the court this noon following a warrant of arrest the same court issued on Tuesday for 35 leaders and activists of the BNP-Jamaat alliance, including Gayeshwar and former Dhaka city mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka, now in abroad, in the violence case.
The arrest warrant was issued as the leaders and activists did not appear before the court on the scheduled day (November 3) during hearing.
The court also asked the officer-in-charge of Rampura police station to submit a report before the court by January 27 next on the execution of arrest warrants.
On December 29 in 2013, miscreants had torched a bus of Suprabhat Paribahan after vandalising it in the city’s Malibagh Chowdhurypara area during the ‘March for Democracy’ programme called by the BNP-led alliance, United News of Bangladesh reports.
Dakkhinkhan thana unit Islami Chhatra Shibir president Mansur Prodhania was also killed in a clash between police and the alliance activists at Malibagh on the same day.
On December 30 in 2013, sub-inspector of Rampura police station Al Mamun had filed two cases with the police station.
On March 20, 2015, investigation officer Mamunur Rashid pressed charges against 49 people, including Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Sadeque Hossain Khoka, Mirza Abbas, Amanullah Aman and Salahuddin Ahmed, in a case filed under the Explosives Substances Act for vandalism and carrying out arson attack.
Later, a court took cognizance of the charges against the accused and asked them to appear before the court on November 3.
