NOVEMBER 7 UPRISING : BNP vows to continue movement
Different political parties and organisations on Saturday observed November 7 in their own way.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party observed the day as ‘national revolution and solidarity day’ renewing vow to ‘continue movement for restoring democracy’.
Factions of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal observed the day as ‘the day of mass-uprising of the people and soldiers.’
Leaders and activists of BNP and its associate bodies led by senior leaders including standing committee members Moudud Ahmed, Mahbubur Rahman and Nazrul Islam Khan placed floral wreaths and offered fateha at the grave of late president Ziaur Rahman, also the BNP founder, at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital at about 10:30am.
The party flag was hoisted atop at BNP central office at Nayapaltan and its offices across the country.
After paying tribute to memory of Zia, Moudud Ahmed said that their movement for restoring democracy would continue.
Leaders, activists and supporters of BNP and its associate organisations with processions thronged the grave side of Zia from the morning to tribute to the party founder.
Jatiya Ganatantrik Party, a component of the BNP-led alliance, also placed wreath at Zia’s grave.
Leaders of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal faction led by Hasanul Haq Inu said that Colonel Abu Taher was the hero of the uprising of the people and soldiers on November 7, 1975 and he had tried to stop unrest among the solders in the cantonment.
They made the remarks at a discussion the party organised at Taher Auditorium at its central office to mark the ‘the day of mass-uprising of the people and soldiers.’
Party president Hasanul Haq Inu, also the information minister, said that Taher was the hero who led the mutiny and Ziaur Rahman was a traitor who killed Taher through a secret trial.
He said that the party was always against military rule in the country.
Ziaur Rahman killed many soldiers in the cantonments to consolidate his power, Inu said.
Chaired by the party vice-president Robiul Alam, the meeting was addressed, among others, by its general secretary Sharif Nurul Ambia, standing committee members Shirin Akhter and Ikbal Hossain Khan, vice-president Mir Hossain Akhter, central leaders Nurul Akhter, Mohammad Khaled and Habibur Rahman Shawkat.
Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal faction led by ASM Abdur Rob also held a discussion at its central office marking the day.
Addressing the discussion, party general secretary Abdul Malek Ratan said that Taher on behalf of the party led the November 7 uprising calling for a national unity based on the spirit of the liberation war, but ‘the traitor, Zia,’ diverted the revolution by proclaiming martial law.
