Misunderstanding caused MPs feeling hurt: TIB

Transparency International Bangladesh on Wednesday said that had any part of its ‘parliament watch report’ or its executive director’s October 25 statement hurt any of the lawmakers, it happened only for ‘misunderstanding’.
The corruption watchdog said this in a statement signed by Sultana Kamal on behalf of TIB board of trustees.
The statement said that the board firmly believed that the report was accurate and it reflected the real scenario as it was prepared based on information and research.
She said that TIB had no intention to undermine the institutional dignity of the parliament.
Disseminating the report at a press conference on October 25, TIB executive director Iftekharuzzaman termed the present parliament a puppet theatre.
The report said that the lawmakers spent most of their time on praising the government and criticising rival parties not represented in the house.
Iftekharuzzaman had said that the lawmakers showed lack of interest in attending parliament and many of them did not participate in the proceedings because of deficiency in parliamentary skills.
He said inclusive and credible elections alone could produce effective parliaments and expected for a fresh and inclusive election.
Following publication of the report and TIB executive director’s statement, lawmakers from ruling Awami League and its allies had been criticising the organisation both in parliament and different political programmes.
