AL won’t secure 30 seats in a fair election: BNP

Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Friday claimed that the ruling Awami League would not secure even 30 parliamentary seats if a free election were held under a neutral government.
BNP spokesman Asaduzzaman Ripon at a news briefing at the party’s central office said the party felt the government was gradually heading down the path of destroying democracy under authoritarian rule by avoiding competitive elections.
He said the ruling party had the ‘unrealistic’ dream of staying in power forever by snatching people’s voting power, realising it would be difficult for them to secure even 30 seats if a free election were held under a neutral government.
Ripon said the government fears participation of all parties in a free and neutral election.
The party spokesman claimed the government, ignoring the proposal for dialogue by the opposition, has lost an opportunity which would prove vital in the future.
He asked why people would have to pay a price for their mistakes.
Ripon criticised the Prime Minister’s ‘indecent’ and ‘non-political’ remarks about BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and senior-vice chairman Tarique Rahman at a public meeting in Bogra on Thursday.
He said the position of Khaleda and Tarique was ‘very strong’ among people irrespective of the indecent comments made by the ruling party about them.
Asked about the vice versa handover of ULFA leader Anup Chetia and Narayanganj seven-murder prime accused Noor Hossian,  Ripon said he would give the party’s reaction to it following advice of the party’s senior leaders.
About Khaleda’s return home from London, he reiterated that he would inform the public once her date of return was finalised.
Ripon said people are fed up with the tyrannical behaviour of the ruling party, its front and associate wings, and lawmakers’ misrule and corruption.
BNP leaders Chowdhury Kamal Ibne Yusuf, Fazlul Huq Milon, Sanaullah Mia, Abdul Latif Jony, Shamimur Rahman Shamim, Asadul Karim Shahin, Noor-e-Ara Safa and Shirin Sultana were present.
