PM urges doctors to behave with patients
The prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, on Friday urged physicians to work in the interest of people by providing optimum healthcare services with good behaviour.
‘Good behaviour with caring attitude of a physician sometimes could substantially cure patients than medicine…So behave well with patients,’ she said while addressing the inaugural session of the 4th national council session of
Swadhinata Chikitsak Parisad, a pro-Awami League physician organisation, at Suhrawardy Udyan.
Mentioning the huge contribution of the common people to medical education, the prime minister said that the government spent Tk 20 lakh for the education of a physician.
‘So, the physicians would have to provide healthcare service in a way so that the poor might not be deprived of the services,’ she said.
Hasina, also the Awami League president, urged the physicians to provide treatment to the physically challenged people with sympathy and special care as the government wanted to ensure their rights.
‘Do not think what you [physicians] earn, but think what you can provide to the people…Your prime responsibility is to provide humanitarian services to the people,’ she said.
The prime minister said that the country’s medical education lacked research, while without research and innovation quality treatment could not be ensured.
She said that the government had already initiated process for the establishment of two more medical universities.
‘The prime objective of the medical universities would be to conduct research… Most meritorious students enrol at medical institutions and they have the merits for research and innovation of new medicines and technologies,’ she said.
Referring to the then BNP-led government’s decision to stop community clinic service during their rule, Hasina said that her government would enact a law so that none could stop community clinic service and other development work in future.
She said that BNP was now engaged in killing foreigners after they failed to make any outcome of the killing of local people in arson attacks during their movement.
She urged all to remain alert and get united against anti-liberation forces ‘now operating a killing mission to tarnish the image of the nation abroad.’
Swadhinata Chikitsak Parisad president AFM Ruhal Haque presided over the programme addressed by health minister Mohammad Nasim, public administration minister Syed Ashraful Islam, prime minister’s former health affairs adviser Syed Modasser Ali, former health minister Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, secretary general of the organisation M Iqbal Arslan and its senior leaders.
SWACHIP held its 4th council session to elect its new executive committee 12 years after its 3rd council held in 2003 though it was mandatory to hold the council session in every two years,
The forum was formed in December 1993 following the foundation of pro-BNP doctors’ wing, Doctors Association of Bangladesh in 1991.
