Khaleda to be arrested on her return: Ershad

Jatiya Party chairman HM Ershad on Monday said BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia will be arrested if she returns home from London on charge of embezzling orphans money.
‘Khaleda Zia will be arrested after her return as the allegation brought against her over misappropriation of orphans’ money has been proved. So, I think she won’t return home now,’ he said.
Ershad came up with the remarks while talking to reporters at his residence Palli Nibas in the city.
The former military ruler said Khaleda is now facing such a consequence as she had filed 42 cases against him when she was in power.
The BNP chief went to London over two months back for eye treatment and celebrating Eid-ul-Azha with her family members there. The delay of her return triggered various speculations.
The hearing on Zia orphanage trust and Zia charitable trust graft cases filed against her and other BNP leaders are being held in the special judge’s court-3 in her absence.
Ershad, also the prime minister’s special envoy, said his party will independently contest the upcoming municipality polls. ‘We’ll finalise our candidates in consultation with party leaders and activists.’
He deplored that the country is under autocratic rule undercover of democracy. ‘People will get killed and disappeared, but no one can speak up and journalists can write anything about it. Such democracy is now prevailing in the country.’
Replying to a question, Ershad said there is no terrorist outfit like Islamic State in Bangladesh as they have no function here. ‘The western countries has created the IS and given its members arms and ammunition. Now they’re talking against IS which is carrying terrorist activities across our country.’
