Path of democratic change in govt now blocked: Ershad

Jatiya Party chairman HM Ershad on Sunday said the path of change in the government through a democratic process in Bangladesh was blocked.
‘Democracy is now besieged in the country, and the path of change in the government through a democratic process is also obstructed,’ he said, Ershad, the prime minister’s special envoy, came up with the remarks while addressing the biennial council of Narail unit Jatiya Party on Shilpakala Academy premises.
He alleged that the government is not arranging a national election in a proper way due to its fear of losing power.
‘In which country we’re living now where there is no security of public life. People have to think twice before leaving their houses in the morning whether they’ll be able to safely return in the evening,’ the Jatiya Party chief observed.
The former military ruler said people are passing their days in panic amid police check posts here and there. ‘It seems we all are besieged. People have no right to move freely, and they also have no right of expression and free thinking.’
He accused BNP of introducing the politics of vengeance in the country. ‘They’d sent me to jail and prompted me to commit suicide. But, I’m still alive and also in a better position than them. I was subjected to huge repression. Now people are seeing what their condition is.’
Ershad urged the party leaders and activists to work hard for making Jatiya Party a strong politic party of the country.
