Religious forum leader hacked

Assailants wielding machetes attacked the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council’s Faridpur district secretary general Aalak Sen in front his house Tuesday afternoon.
The religious minority leader was admitted to the Faridpur Medical College Hospital with injuries on hands and legs.
‘We are not sure about the motive of the attack right at the moment. But we are looking at all possible aspects in the investigation. He is politically active [with ruling Awami League] as well being vocal on minority issues,’ said the Faridpur police superintendent Zamil Hassan.
His family said the incident took place when he was getting of the house located in Kamalapur area.
Two miscreants carried out the attack with the sharp weapons. ‘As I tried to rescue my husband they shoved me down to the ground,’ said his wife Shikha Sen.
After a brief conversation with the injured person, the district headquarters police station officer-in-charge Nazimuddin Ahmed told New Age that Aalak was providing Indian visa processing services to locals and two youths on Monday approached him for the service.
‘The young men arrived again in the afternoon at his house and started walking with him down a narrow road in front of his house. Minutes after, the youths shoved him down and tried to slit his throat,’ the police officer said.
He said after Aalak resisted and started shouting, the two youths hacked at his hands and legs and fled the scene.
‘We suspect the incident happened as a sequel to grievances over visa processing, or its related services,’ Nazimuddin claimed.
He said four teams were looking for the attackers as police suspected it was carried out by local miscreants.
Nazimuddin claimed the attack did not appear to be of the same vein as the attacks on Khizir Khan and the bloggers and publishers.
The police superintendent, Zamil, however, said ‘we will get more leads once we are able to talk to Aalak Sen and to get more information about the two assailants and their conversation with Aalak .’
The victim, however, told police officials he had no clue why the attack was carried out as he had no enmity with anybody in his area.
The Faridpur Medical College Hospital emergency physician Deepamkar Kumar confirmed Aalak sustained injuries on his hands and legs.
The attack took place when the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council, a platform of the religious minorities, announced recently it would hold a grand rally in the capital Dhaka on December 4 to press home their demand to stop violence against the minority people.
The general secretary of the council, Rana Dashgupta, who also hails from Faridpur, had told a press conference on November 15 that the religious minorities across the country were being attacked and that the ethnic minorities were deprived of their rights.
He said the ethnic minorities did not get recognition by the government and that the implementation of the Chittagong Hill Tracts Peace Treaty was incomplete.
