Khaleda to decide whether BNP would contest municipal polls

Bangladesh Nationalist Party senior leaders at a meeting on Wednesday night empowered party chairperson Khaleda Zia to decide whether the party would contest municipal elections scheduled for December 30.
The meeting chaired by Khaleda at her Gulshan office began at about 9:00pm and lasted for more than two hours.
After the meeting, BNP spokesman Asaduzzaman Ripon at a briefing said that the leaders at the meeting were divided over contesting the municipal polls.
He said no decision was made on the issue and the meeting empowered Khaleda to make the final decision.
He said the party chairperson would review the opinions of the party leaders today.
Asked when the decision could be known, he said undoubtedly before deadline for submission of nominations.
He said Khaleda Zia listened attentively to the opinions of the leaders.
BNP leaders Moudud Ahmed, Mahbubur Rahman, ASM Hannan Shah, Jamiruddin Sircar, Goyeshawar Chandra Roy, Abdullah Al Noman, Kamal Ibne Yusuf, Altaf Hossain Chowdhury, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, Selima Rahman, Osman Farruk and Mohammad Shahjahan, among others, attended the meeting.
