Bangla Academy celebrates diamond jubilee
Bangla Academy celebrated its 60th founding anniversary in the city on Thursday amid much enthusiasm and fanfare.
Bangla Academy drew the celebration in the morning by paying tributes to the martyrs of 1952 language movement, laying a wreath at the altar of the Central Shaheed Minar.
A discussion and a cultural programme followed at the academy’s Abdul Karim Sahitya Bisharad auditorium.
President of Bangla Academy professor emeritus Anisuzzaman presided over the discussion while the director general of the academy, Shamsuzzaman Khan, delivered the welcome speech.
A jubilee celebration lecture was delivered by VB Ganeshan of Chennai, India.
Finance Minister Abul Mal Abdul Muhith was chief guest of the programme while Shaoli Mitra, president of West Bengal Bangla Academy, Barinboron Ghosh, president of Bangiya Sahitya Parishad and Cultural affairs minister Asaduzzaman Noor attended the event as special guests. A number of writers, poets, social and cultural activists were also present.
Professor emeritus Anisuzzaman said the academy has primarily been entrusted with conducting research on Bangla language, culture, history and publishing fictions, literary and research works.
‘Bangla Academy has become a part of our national identity,’ he said.
Finance minister Abul Mal Abdul Muhit said evolving of Bangla Academy is directly linked to the historic Language Movement that paved the way for Bangalee nationalism and ultimately led to the emergence of Bangladesh.
