Single candidate for 33 councillor positions in Feni

Election Commission officials on Friday expressed their ignorance about the Awami League’s obstructing anyone outside the party from submitting nomination papers for 33 of the 48 councillor positions in three Feni municipalities.
The submission of nominations closed on Thursday. The elections to 235 municipal councils are scheduled for December 30.
None other than the ruling AL-backed 33 candidates could file their nominations for the 33 positions of ward councillors, including the seats severed for women, as ruling party activists took position in the returning officer’s offices and obstructed other aspirants from submitting the nominations.
Election commissioner Shah Nawaz and commission secretary M Sirajul Islam said that they had no information about the incidents and they declined to make any comment in this regard.
Feni sadar returning officer M Enamul Haque hung up the phone when he was asked about the incident.
Feni district unit Bangladesh Nationalist Party acting president Abu Taher said that they informed the returning officer and other officials concern about the incidents, but the officials took no measure.
In another development, two mayoral aspirants – M Shajhan Mia and Nazma Akter – submitted applications against the returning officer for Daudkandi in Comilla on Friday alleging that the returning officer did not receive their nomination papers.
They requested the chief election commissioner to take legal action against the returning officer and take necessary steps for the submission of their nominations.
