RMG workers run amok after fellow’s death
Apparel workers staged protests blocking road for several hours in the capital’s Kalamapur and its adjacent areas on Tuesday as an apparel worker was killed and three were injured in a traffic accident on Monday night.
Workers of several apparel factories went on work abstention and took to the street on Tuesday morning demanding justice for the killing of Aklima Akhter and injuring three others, who were returning home after finishing work at Olio Apparels factory near Kamalapur railway station on Monday night.
The workers of Olio Apparels called the workers of nearby eight factories, including Epoch Garments and Dornik Apparels, and took to the street blocking all roads connecting Kamalapur railway station at 10:00am causing traffic congestion in business area in the busy hours.
Several buses were vandalised during the protests.
Olio Apparels worker Taslima Khatun said that they staged protests as the authorities kept them in dark about the fate of their colleagues who met accident on Monday night.

‘At the same time, we are protesting against the killing of our fellow,’ she said, adding, ‘We took to the street after we came to know another worker succumbed to her injuries during treatment.’
The workers said that the protests were intensified after police picked up a worker, Joney, from the spot.
‘The commotion triggered following the rumour that another accident victim succumbed to her injuries,’ said Dhaka Metropolitan Police crime division (Motijheel) deputy commissioner Anwar Hussain.
Situation improved at about 1:30pm as Joney was released.
A bus of Balaka Paribahan hit swinging operator Aklima Akter, 38, of Olio Apparels and her colleagues Rahima and Hazera, and a rickshaw puller, who were waiting road side near the Kamalapur Railway at about 8:00pm on Monday. Aklima died on the spot.
Police arrested driver Mohammad Ariful of Balaka Paribahan.
Aklima’s husband Lablu Sheikh filed case with Shahjahanpur police station accusing Ariful of killing Aklima by negligence and reckless driving.
Sub-inspector Fazlul Haque, the investigation officer of the case, said, ‘We did not find documents including driving licence of Ariful although he claimed of having those.’
Olio’s factory in-charge Kazi Taslim Uddin said the condition of Hazera, who was admitted to Islami Hospital at Kamalapur with minor injuries, was improving while another injured Rahima left hospital. ‘Aklima will be compensated,’ said Taslim.
