Khaleda asks party leaders to go to local areas for electioneering

Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia Saturday night asks party leaders to go to their local areas to take part in electioneering in the upcoming municipal polls, and stay in the race till last moment.
She also asked the party’s senior and mid-level leaders to expose the government before people if ruling party candidates resort to vote rigging to forcibly win the elections.
Khaleda’s instructions came at a meeting she presided over in the presence the party’s vice-chairmen, her advisory council members, joint secretary generals and organising secretaries, at her Gulshan office.
BNP rebel candidates in the polls will reportedly withdraw their candidatures, meeting sources said.
After the meeting that lasted for about two hour from 9:15 pm, BNP vice-chairman Abdullah Al Noman told New Age the party chairperson urged them to go to their areas for electioneering and encourage voters to go to polling centers to exercise their franchise.
He said the meeting mainly discussed the December 30 municipal polls under party symbol.
Chittagong division organising secretary Golam Akbar Khandaker said all the senior leaders have been asked to go their respective areas for election campaign.
He said all leaders wose spoke at the meeting said BNP’s decision to contest the municipal polls was right.
A joint secretary general said leaders at the meeting decided the party would fight in the election till the last moment and expose the government’s undemocratic character if it snatched away people’s voting rights to make ruling party candidates win.
In reply to a question, he said local leaders would talk with partners of BNP alliance, particularly key ally Jamaat-e-Islami, regarding election negotiations and joint campaigns.
