Journalist Faruque killed in road accident

Former deputy editor of Bangla daily Kaler Kantha Abdullah Al Faruque died at Square Hospital on Sunday morning after being hit by a truck in the city’s Kakrail area early Sunday.
He was 53.
Faruque’s relatives said he was hit by a truck while he was crossing the road near Rajmani cinema at Kakrail around 1:30am on the day.
An auto-rickshaw driver took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and from there he was shifted to Square Hospital where he died around 8:00am.
He was buried at Azimpur graveyard after two namaz-e-janazas at National Press Club and at Dhaka Reporters Unity.
His well wishers, colleagues, politicians and journalists showed last respect to him at National Press Club before his janaza.
Faruq is survived by wife, one son and one daughter.
Protesting at the killing of Faruque, Dhaka Reporters Unity held demonstrations blocking the road in front of National Press Club for an hour after Faruque’s janaza.
The DRU issued its ultimatum demanding arrest of the truck driver within 24 hours.
From the protest, DRU president Jamal Uddin announced a protest rally in front of National Press Club for Monday and human-chain at 11:00am for Tuesday.
Ramna police station officer-in-charge Moshiur Rahman said neither the truck nor the driver was identified.
Faruque’s brother-in-law Anisur Rahman filed a case in this connection, the OC said.
After the janaza, information minister Hasanul Haque Inu said the driver must be put on trial.
He ordered law enforcement agencies to arrest the driver immediately.
Prime minister’s adviser Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Samakal editor Golam Sarwar, journalist leader Monjurul Ahsan Bulbul and National Press Club president Shafiqur Rahman, among others, attended the janaza.
Born on December 31, 1962 at Brishakhali of Bera in Pabna, Faruque was the general secretary of Bera College Students Union in 1980-81.
He began journalism in 1986 and served Bengali dailies Sangbad, Jugantar, Samakal and Kaler Kantha in different capacities.
