Now access to Skype, Tweeter, Emo blocked
The Bangladesh Telephone Regularity Commission on Sunday instructed the IIG and mobile phone operators to block access to social media services Skype, Tweeter and Emo in Bangladesh.
The commission issued the instruction at about 9:00pm, said sources in the commission and the mobile operators.
Earlier on November 18 the government blocked access to social media network Facebook and other internet-based communications apps like WhatsApp and Viber.
The government on December 10 unblocked the access to social networking site Facebook after three weeks.
The access to several other communication apps such as WhatsApp, Viber, Tango, Line and Hangout, however, remained blocked.
State minister for posts and telecommunication Tarana Halim told reporters at her office on December 10 that access to those communication apps remained blocked on security grounds.
Many people have, however, been using alternative methods to access the apps.
Facebook had also been accessed by many people through alternative ways.
Explaining the reason behind such restriction, the home minister had earlier told reporters that ‘although the law and order situation is good, to carry out the execution of the war criminals the government has blocked some social networking sites as a precaution.’
The prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, in parliament in early November warned that the government might block access to the social networking sites to combat terrorism.
In September 2012, the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission blocked access to video sharing site YouTube in Bangladesh for 260 days following worldwide protests at a 14-minute trailer of a film titled ‘Innocence of Muslims’ which mocks Islam and its Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh).
