Chittagong Govt College halls closed after BCL, Shibir clash
Chittagong Government College authorities closed all the residential halls of the college after five people were injured in a clash between ruling Awami League-backed student organisation Bangladesh Chhatra League and Jamaat-e-Islami- backed student organisation Islami Chhatra Shibir over placing wreaths at Shaheed Minar at Chittagong Government College on Wednesday.
Male students were asked to vacate their hall by 8:00am on Thursday and female students by 10:00am.
The decision was made at emergency meeting of the academic council this evening.
College principal Jesmin Ara Begum also said that a 5-member probe committee was formed to investigate the matter.
Police raided the college after the clash and detained 71 Shibir men.
Additional policemen were deployed, said Chittagong Metropolitan Police additional commissioner (crime and operations) Debdas Bhattacharya.
Kotwali police station officer-in-charge Jasim Uddin said that the incident took place at about 1:00pm when both the organisations came to pay homage to the martyrs of the War of Independence in 1971.
Shibir activists chased the Chhatra league activists after an altercation, witnesses said.
The activists of Chhatra League and Shibir also pelted brickbats at each other leaving at least five people injured, Debdas said. Police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
