Cold pinches people
Temperature is likely to fall further today, with people already experiencing the pinch of bitter cold, said the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.
The temperature started to fall following rain across the country on Thursday night and Friday which affected normal life of people, especially the homeless.
People were seen to make fires to keep them warm while working class people had to brave the cold to work outside in different districts including Rangpur, Faridpur, Dinajpur, Cox’s Bazar, Khagrachari and Nilphamari.
On Friday, sunlight was not seen in most of the parts of the country, except few northern districts, due to rain and gloomy weather, said officials.
BMD meteorologists said since Thursday night light rainfall had been experienced in most of the districts, especially the southern districts.
Due to rainfall, the temperature would fall by one or two degrees Celsius from today and chilly weather would be experienced, they said.
The sunlight, however, is also expected to be seen today.
Dinajpur had the country’s lowest temperature, 9.2 degrees Celsius and 9.8 degrees Celsius in Dimla while Dhaka experienced 15 degrees Celsius on Friday.
The Met office recorded the highest rainfall, 15mm, in Patuakhali while it recorded 14mm in Hatiya and Cox’s Bazar and 10mm in Chittagong.
New Age Khagrachari correspondent reported that since Friday night drizzles, chilly wind, mere presence of sunlight and fog caused huge sufferings to people in three Chittagong Hill Tracts districts and Chittagong.
In Khagrachari, poor people made fires to keep off cold at different places including Pan Khaiya Para, Zero Mile, Ganj Para, Battoli, Raj Para and Araimile.
The Met office recorded 1mm rain in Dhaka city drizzle on Friday which caused chilly weather all daylong without mere presence of sun.
Our correspondent in Cox’s Bazar reported that people suffered due to torrential rain for last two days.
Our Barisal correspondent reported that in the district there was drizzle all over the day.
Clouds covered the sun throughout the day amid mists and drizzles to worsen the situation further.
New Age Khulna correspondent reported that after raining on Friday morning and gloomy weather shivering cold caused suffering to people.
BMD weather forecast, dated December 18 at 6:00pm valid for next 24 hours, says drizzle is likely to occur at one or two places over the Khulna, Barisal and Chittagong divisions.
Light to moderate fog may occur at places elsewhere over the country during midnight till today morning, it adds.
Mild cold wave is sweeping over the regions of Dinajpur and Nilphamari and it may spread over the rest part of Rangpur division and some regions of the Rajshahi, Khulna and Dhaka divisions.
