Special drives after municipal polls: HM

Home affairs minister Asaduzzaman Khan said on Sunday that law enforcement agencies would launch special drives exclusively in militancy-prone areas after the December 30 municipal polls across the country.
Replying to queries, he told reporters at the ministry that the attack on Ahmadiya community in Rajshahi on December 25 was a part of local and international conspiracy to destabilise the country.
‘There is no IS [Islamic State] in Bangladesh…Such an attack on religious minorities is a part of local and international conspiracy to destabilise the country,’ Asaduzzaman said.
Police were yet to ascertain the identity of the youth died in an explosive attack allegedly carried out by himself inside a mosque of religious minority group Ahmadiya Muslims in a remote area of Bagmara in Rajshahi on December 25.
US-based terrorism-monitoring group, SITE Intelligence, claimed at its website on Saturday, ‘the Islamic State (IS) claimed credit for the suicide bombing at an Ahmadi Muslim mosque in Rajshahi district in Bangladesh.’
SITE director Rita Katz twitted at about 6:00pm on Saturday, ‘ISIS claimed its first suicide bombing in Bangladesh at Ahmadi Mosque; it is the 9th attack claimed by ISIS since Sep.’
The attack on the minority Ahmadiya Muslims came after three recent incidents of bomb and gun attacks on minority Shia Muslims in the country.
Asaduzzaman said that those attacks were interlinked and the outcome of local and international plots to threaten the country’s stability.
Earlier on December 18, several bombs exploded in two mosques in Chittagong naval base during juma prayers, leaving more than a dozen people injured.
A similar prayer-time attack on devotees in a Shia mosque in Bogra left one killed and three injured on November 27.
Two men were killed and over hundred were injured in a bomb attack on Shia people at Shia headquarters at Husaini Dalan in the Old Dhaka on October 24.
