ENGLISH MEDIUM BOOKS : Project Liberation War history properly: PM
Prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday directed the authorities concerned to take necessary measures for projecting the history of the War of Liberation in the academic books of the English medium school books.
‘The children are the future leaders of the country and the Liberation War and the victory are our pride…. there is the history of the Liberation War in Bangla medium school books. But it is not properly incorporated in the English medium school books,’ she said.
‘So, you will have to take necessary steps to let the kids know about the long struggle for country’s independence and supreme sacrifices of three million martyrs,’ she said adding this would help the students develop their self-confidence and sense of dignity.
The prime minister said this when formally receiving the results of this year’s Primary School Certificate, Junior School Certificate and their equivalent examinations.
Education minister Nurul Islam Nahid and primary and mass education minister Advocate Mustafizur Rahman handed over the results to the prime minister at a simple ceremony held at the PM’s official Ganobhaban residence in Dhaka on Thursday morning.
From the same function, the prime minister inaugurated the textbook distribution programme across the country.
The prime minister said Bangladesh achieved the hard-earned independence under the leadership of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the aim was to establish a hunger and poverty free educated nation.
‘No nation could achieve its coveted goal without the development of education. That’s why, Bangabandhu gave due importance to education making primary education compulsory as well as nationalising 37,000 primary schools,’ she said.
Following his foot print, Sheikh Hasina said, her government also nationalised 26,000 primary schools as well as jobs of over one lakh primary teachers, introduced free text book distribution programmes, and is providing stipends to poor meritorious students.
In this connection, the prime minister stressed the need for creating funds for continuing mid-day meal programme in all educational institutions to check dropout of students and carry out other development activities.
She also suggested the authorities to seek assistance and cooperation from the local rich people, public representatives and alumni members to launch and continue mid-day meal programme.
Referring to the formation of the prime minister’s Education Assistance Trust Fund, Sheikh Hasina said 1.28 crore students are now receiving stipends from the fund.
‘We don’t want that no student be deprived of education for poverty,’ she said, adding the fund is helping the poor meritorious students to continue their higher study as well as lessening the burden of their guardians.
Highlighting the success of introduction of PSC, JSC and JDC examinations, she said these examinations are building up consciousness and self confidence among the children and thereby helping them remove fear on the SSC examinations.
Sheikh Hasina extended her New Year greetings to the countrymen and said the Textbook Festival to be celebrated today is a New Year gift for the people.
Prime minister’s adviser HT Imam, chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on primary and mass education ministry Motahar Hossain, PMO secretary Suraiya Begum, education secretary Sohrab Hossain, primary and mass education secretary Humayun Khalid, PM’s press secretary Ihsanul Karim and NCTB chairman Professor Narayan Chandra Paul were present on the occasion, among others.
