Elections to 600 UPs by March: EC

The Election Commission is preparing for elections to 600 of the 4,544 union parishads in end March.
Election commissioner Md Shah Newaz told reporters at his office on Tuesday that the Local Government (Union Parishads) Act had already been amended making provisions for partisan elections to the union councils.
He said that the commission already prepared a draft electoral code of conduct for the union council elections and ministers, lawmakers, mayors and upizala chairmen would not be allowed in the electioneering.
He said that the commission would send the draft electoral code to the law ministry within a day or two for vetting.
He said that tenures of the remaining 3,944 union councils would expire by June.
The previous union council elections were held in 2011.
