Prices of rice, sugar, garlic mark rise

The prices of rice, sugar and garlic increased on the city’s retail market over the week ending Friday.
Traders said that the prices of rice (miniket and najirshail) and garlic increased due to off seasonal supply shortage while the price of sugar increased due to imposing value added tax on import.
According to the traders, BR-28, miniket and najirshail rice are harvested only one time in a year and the season ended more than six months ago.
On the other hand, the harvesting season of garlic ended about 10/11 months ago and consumers will have to wait for more or less one month for new crops at a low price.
The prices of BR-28, miniket and najirshail rice increased by Tk 2-Tk 4 a kg over the week.
The coarse variety of miniket rice was retailing at Tk 47-Tk 50 a kg while fine variety of miniket was selling at Tk 50-Tk 54 a kg.
The fine variety of najirshail rice was being sold at Tk 54-Tk 56 a kg over the week.
The fine variety of BR-28 rice was selling at Tk 46-Tk 48 a kg and the coarse variety was selling at Tk 40-Tk 42 a kg on Friday.
The price of sugar increased by Tk 5 a kg as the government imposed 15 per cent value added tax on import of raw sugar and the item was selling at Tk 50 a kg over the week.
The price of garlic increased by Tk 10 a kg and the local variety of garlic was retailing at Tk 110-Tk 120 a kg while the imported one was selling at Tk 140-Tk 150 a kg on Friday.
The prices of vegetables remained stable during the week.
Aubergine was selling at Tk 30-Tk 40 a kg, bitter gourd at Tk 40 a kg, cauliflower at Tk 25 a piece, cabbage at Tk 20 a piece, beans at Tk 30-Tk 40 a kg, cucumber at Tk 30 a kg, tomato at Tk 40 a kg, papaya at Tk 25 a kg and green chilli at Tk 60 a kg over the week.
The price of broiler chicken decreased by Tk 10 a kg and the item was selling at
Tk 130-Tk 140 a kg while the locally-bred hens were selling at Tk 280-Tk 320 a kg on the day.
The price of beef remained high and the item was selling at Tk 370-Tk 400 a kg while mutton was selling at Tk 500-Tk 550 a kg on Friday.
Price of unpacked soya bean oil remained unchanged and the item was selling at Tk 88-Tk 90 a litre on Friday while palm oil was selling at Tk 65-Tk 67 a litre on the day.
A one-litre container of soya bean oil was selling at Tk 100 while a five-litre container was selling at Tk 460-Tk 480 on Friday.
The price of onion remained unchanged. The newly-harvested local variety of onion was selling at Tk 30-Tk 35 a kg while the imported one was retailing at Tk 35 a kg on Friday.
Potato was selling at Tk 30-Tk 35 a kg over the week.
The price of egg remained high and the item was selling at Tk 34 a hali (four pieces) in the city.
Red lentil price also remained unchanged. The fine variety of the item was selling at Tk 120-Tk 140 a kg while the imported one (coarse variety) was selling at Tk 100 a kg.
The prices of fish remained unchanged over the week. Rohita was selling at Tk 200-Tk 320 a kg, Katla at Tk 200-Tk 300 a kg, Pangas at Tk 140-Tk 200 a kg and Tilapia at Tk 120-Tk 180 a kg, depending on their size and quality.
