Two Dhaka city AL committees soon: Hasina
Addressing a memorial meeting for Dhaka city Awami leader MA Aziz, who died on January 23, at Institution of Engineers Bangladesh, she however, gave no deadline for announcing the committees.
Hasina said that lists of prospective leaders of the two city units had already been prepared.
‘I have received the names of about 400 leaders, but those who have dedication to strengthening the party and worked for the party after the January 11, 2007 changeover and in the elections will be evaluated,’ she said.
The council session of the Dhaka city unit was held at Suhrawardy Udyan on December 27, 2012 after a lapse of nine years and a half although the party constitution stipulated for holding the council session in every three years.
The councillors of Dhaka city Awami League had, however, authorised party president Hasina to announce their new leaderships in the 2012 council session and fresh leadership was yet to be announced.
The ruling party in February 2014 decided to split the Dhaka city unit into two – Dhaka north and Dhaka south.
The prime minister recalled the contribution of MA Aziz to the Awami League and every movement especially the movement for her release from jail after the January 11, 2007 changeover.
She said that Awami League had survived even after many attacks on it only because of the dedicated leaders and activists of the party.
Dhaka city Awami League vice-president Kamal Ahmed Majumder presided over the meeting, addressed, among others, by senior Awami League leaders Amir Hossain Amu, Tofail Ahmed, Matia Chowdhury, Mahbubul Alam Hanif and Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya.
