Govt, UNICEF to assess health facility for adolescents

Health professionals on Wednesday underscored the need for ensuring quality and adolescent-friendly health services for a strong future of the country’s teenagers.
They made the observation at a workshop on ‘review of tools for adolescent health facility assessment’ jointly arranged by UNICEF and Department of Public Health and Informatics of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University at the university.
The speakers said interventions in education, health provision, gender equity and violence-prevention were necessary preconditions for the growth of adolescents and their bright future.
They suggested continuing research initiatives to improve the quality of health services for adolescents in Bangladesh.
The country now has about 36 million adolescents.
It was revealed at the workshop that UNICEF, in collaboration with Director General Family Planning and Director General of Health Services, has recently launched a comprehensive adolescent health program in four districts and two city corporations of the country.
Under the programme, a pioneering study will be conducted to assess adolescent health facility in five districts. The study will assess health facilities at district, upazila and union level and document the health services available for adolescents.  BSMMU vice-chancellor Kamrul Hasan Khan addressed the workshop as the chief guest.

BSMMU’s pro-vice chancellors – Shahidullah Shikder and Md Sharfuddin Ahmed, Chief, Health Section, UNICEF’s health section chief Lianne Kuppens, Canadian high commission’s senior development advisor Sylvia Islam, DGHS’ PHC director Habib Abdullah Sohel, and DGFP line director Mohammad Sharif were also present.
