ANGER OVER NEW JCD COMMITTEE: Rebels run amok
Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal office were set on fire and Bangladesh Nationalist Party central office was vandalised on Monday allegedly by rebels of the BNP-backed student organisation in protest of being deprived of desired positions in 736-member Chhatra Dal central committee.
They vandalized mural of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman, set fire to portraits of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia in the party office at Nayapaltan and two motorbikes parked in front of the office at about 3:45pm, witnesses said.
Fire fighters doused the fire.
BNP claimed that some ‘miscreants’ being patronised by the government staged the violent incidents to foil the party’s national council scheduled for March 19.
It was learnt that Chhatra Dal vice-president Rakibul Islam Royal, organising secretary Ishaq Sarker and joint secretary Raushwan led the protesters.
Rakibul told New Age that the activists staged protests against the inclusion of ‘cheat, fraud, thief and characterless people’ in the 736-member committee.
He said that they demanded resignation of BNP student affairs secretary Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anne and assistant student affairs secretary Sultan Salahuddin Tuku and immediate cancellation of the 736-member committee.
On Saturday night the full-fledged 736-member central committee was approved by BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia.
Paltan police officer-in-charge Morshed Alam said that the incident was the outcome of internal conflict of Chhatra Dal.
He said they rushed to the spot soon after getting information.
BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi at the party central office told reporters that some ‘miscreants’ under patronisation of the government staged the violent incidents.
He alleged the incident was a part of the government’s ongoing conspiracy to eliminate opposition and to foil the party’s national council.
Replying to a query, he said that Chhatra Dal activists could never vandalise the mural of Ziaur Rahman and set fire to Khaleda’s portrait.
Witnesses said about 50-60 Chhatra Dal activists came with a procession and assembled in front of the BNP central office at about 3:45pm. They chanted slogans against the new Chhatra Dal committee. They first set fire to two motorbikes parked in front of the BNP office.
Some of the demonstrators set fire to Chhatra Dal central office housed on third floor of BNP office and partially vandalised BNP central office, damaged mural of Zia and set fire to posters, banners and portraits of Khaleda, the witnesses said.
