Govt out to keep Mahmudur in jail by all means: BNP

Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Wednesday claimed the government was intervening in the justice system to prevent release of people who get bail.
BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi at a news briefing at the party’s central office alleged that the work of the Attorney General was to try to continuously prevent the release of accused persons who received bail from the courts.
The news briefing was arranged to press the government to release the acting editor of daily Amar Desh, Mahmudur Rahman, from jail.
Rizvi said Mahmudur Rahman has been detained in jail for the last 1035 days ‘without any crime’ and became a victim of government’s repression out of political vendetta.
He said although Mahmudur got bail from the high court in all cases filed against him he was still not released from jail.
He said Mahmudur has been kept in jail on various pretext.
Rizvi said the government intended to forcibly keep Mahmudur in jail.
He said BNP was apprehensive the government is making various attempts to ensure Mahmudur does not get released from jail and is attempting to implicate him in further ‘false’ cases.
Rizvi demanded immediate release of Mahmudur.
Referring to the recent remarks by president Abdul Hamid that an attack on newspapers is a threat to democracy, the BNP leader said in reality the government was working totally opposite to the President’s statement.
BNP leaders Nazim Uddin Alam, Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, BFUJ faction secretary general M Abdullah and executive editor of Amar Desh Syed Abdal Ahmed, among others, were present.
