Constitution expert Mahmudul Islam dies

Constitution expert, Mahmudul Islam, also a senior jurist died on Monday night.
The former attorney general who was considered as a law legend of the country died at about midnight at United Hospital at Gulshan where he was undergoing treatment of various diseases including complications in the lungs and kidney, said a relation of his lawyer Sheikh Md Morshed.
He was 80 and survived by his wife, sons Asif Islam and Arif Islam, both engineering leaving in Canada, and a host of friends and admirers to mourn the death.
Mahmudud Islam was the first lawyer in Bangladesh to write a book, Constitutional Law of Bangladesh, researching the constitution.
His other books include ‘Law of Civil Procedure’ and ‘Interpretation of Statistics and Document’.
Born in Rangpur in 1936, Mahmudul Islam passed his higher secondary from Rangpur Carmichael College.
After receiving his law degree from Dhaka University, he started his career at Rangpur bar and later got enlisted at the High Court.
He became assistant attorney general in 1972.
He served as the attorney general between 1998 and 2001. He resigned on the very day the government took charge after the eighth parliamentary elections.
The Supreme Court had sought his assistance as amicus curiae in several significant cases.
His relatives said they were planning to bury Mahmudul in Rangpur after his sons’ arrival on Thursday.
