Ex-minister Enamul Haque passes away
Former social welfare minister Enamul Haque Mostafa Shahid passed away at a city hospital on Thursday. He was 78.
Enamul Haque, who had been suffering from kidney problems, breathed his last at Square Hospitals around 12:30pm, said his elder son Nizamul Haque Rana.
He left behind his wife, two sons and a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn his death.
Born in 1938 at Kutirgaon village of Chunarughat upazila in Habiganj, Enamul Haque was elected parliament member for six times – 1970, 1973, 1991, 1996, 2001 and 2008 – with Awami League ticket from Habiganj-4 constituency.
He served as the social welfare minister from January 6, 2009 to March 14, 2014.
The former minister was honoured with the Ekushey Padak, one of Bangladesh’s highest civilian awards, in 2013 for his contribution to the 1971 Liberation War.
Meanwhile, president Abdul Hamid, prime minister Sheikh Hasina and speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury expressed deep shock at the death of the former social welfare minister.
They prayed for the salvation of the departed soul and conveyed their sympathies to the bereaved family members.
Prime minister Sheikh Hasina also paid rich tributes to Enamul Haque by placing a wreath on his coffin at the South Plaza of Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban in the afternoon after his first namaz-e-janaza there.
Besides, on behalf of president Abdul Hamid, his deputy military secretary, and speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury and deputy speaker Fazle Rabbi Mia placed wreaths.
On behalf of Bangladesh Awami League, commerce minister and advisory council member of the party Tofail Ahmed and deceased’ eldest son Nizamul Haque Rana delivered brief speeches, while advocate Abu Zahir, MP, gave an address on the life sketch of Enamul Haque.
A special munajat, led by Jatiya Sangsad Mosque imam, was offered after the janaza seeking eternal peace of the departed soul.
Health minister Mohammad Nasim, road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader, housing and public works minister engineer Mosharraf Hossain, railways minister Mazibul Hoque, civil aviation and tourism minister Rashed Khan Menon, food minister advocate Qamrul Islam, AL presidium member advocate Sahara Khatun, chief whip ASM Feroz, central AL leaders Muhammad Faruk Khan, Abdur Razzak and Abul Hasnat Abdullah, PM’s press secretary Ihsanul Karim, whips and parliament members were present on the occasion.
