JSD calls for third political force

Politicians from left leaning and democratic parties Thursday urged all to form a ‘third political force,’ independent of influences of the two big parties, for restoring democracy in the country.
The politicians were addressing the opening session of the national conference of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal led by ASM Abdur Rob in the city.
Democracy and voting rights of the people were seized after the ‘controversial’ general election held on January 5 in 2014 and since then the country had sunk into political crisis, they observed.
A faction of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal led by ASM Abdur Rob, held their triennial central council session at Mahanagar Natyamancha.
In the opening session of the conference, president of the party— ASM Abdur Rob— said that the country entered into an impasse after the ‘voter-less’ general elections held on January 5 two years ago.
The two big political parties Awami League and Bangladesh Nationalist Party have failed to fulfill the aspirations of the people and that the people are now eagerly waiting to lend their supports to any third political force for restoring democratic rules in the country, Rob said.
Khalequzzaman, general secretary of Socialist Party of Bangladesh claimed that the ruling parties have failed to fill the desires of the people spirited with the War of Independence of 1971 and they have taken the country far away from those spirits.
‘The country is now being run and controlled by the plunderers and corrupt people,’ Khalequzzaman said.
He also called on the left and democratic political forces to get united for endorsing a third political force.
General secretary of the Revolutionary Workers Party of Bangladesh, Saiful Huq, said that the incumbent Awami League-led government came to power through a ‘controversial’ general election. Therefore, he argued, they have no authority to stay in power. Abdul Malek Ratan, general secretary of the JSD, demanded holding of a participatory, credible, free and fair general election in the country.
He also demanded formation of a bicameral parliament and dividing the county into nine provinces to ensure good and effective governance.
Chaired by ASM Abdur Rob, labour leader Anwara Begum, Nagarik Oikya leader Shahidullah Kaiser, the JSD central leader Ataul Karim Faroque, among others, spoke at the opening session.
The opening session was followed by a procession that paraded different city streets. And then a council session was held to elect a new central committee of the party.
Several hundred party delegates and councilors from across the country attended the council session.
