500 acres of PWD land occupied illegally

Over 500 acres of Public Works Department lands have been illegally occupied by different quarters.
Housing and public works minister Mosharraf Hossain on Sunday, in reply to a query, told the parliament that 503.29 acres of land under Housing and Public Works Department were illegally occupied.
He said they could not recover the grabbed lands as cases were pending with courts in this connection.
He, however, said legal process was going on to recover the lands.
The minister also said the illegally grabbed lands would be recovered gradually and brought under government’s control.
Replying to another query as to how many abandoned houses were there in the capital and whether the houses would be allocated to those who were elected lawmakers for the first time, the minister said currently there are 6,406 abandoned houses in the capital.
He also said as per a circular of the public works ministry, the abandoned houses were allocated to the families of martyred people and wounded freedom fighters and there was no provision to allot them to anyone else.
