JSD faction observes flag hoisting day
Politicians and civil society leaders on Wednesday urged the government to give state recognition to March 2 as flag hoisting day when in 1971 student leader ASM Abdur Rob first hoisted national flag of Bangladesh at Dhaka University.
They made the demand at a discussion organised by Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal faction, led by Rob, at National Press Club in the capital to observe flag hoisting day.
The JSD faction president called on the government to uphold ‘true’ history of the liberation war of Bangladesh.
He also called the government to observe March 2 at the state level.
He appealed to the opposition political parties to be united to forge a third political force, out of influence of the two big political parties — Awami League and Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
Krishak Shramik Janata League president Abdul Kader Siddique said the country was going through a serious political crisis after the ‘controversial’ general elections of January 5 in 2014.
He said all the progressive political parties must unite to restore democratic rule in the country.
SM Akram, adviser to Nagarik Oikya, called on the government to stop repression on the opposition political leaders and demanded release of convener of their organisation Mahmudur Rahman Manna.
Abdul Malek Ratan, general secretary of the JSD faction, said the ruling Awami League and BNP had failed to fulfil the aspirations of people.
Chaired by JSD leader Shahidullah Farizee, the programme was attended, among others, by general secretary of Revolutionary Workers Party of Bangladesh Saiful Huq, Islamist leader AKM Hemayet Uddin, JSD leader Shahid Uddin Mahmud and others.
