AL, Ganajagaran Mancha, cultural bodies hail verdict

The ruling Awami League, Ganajagaran Mancha and different political and cultural organisations have expressed satisfaction over the Appellate Division verdict upholding the death sentence for Jamaat-e-Islami leader Mir Quasem Ali for crimes against humanity he had committed during war of liberation in 1971.
AL leaders at a rally on Bangabandhu Avenue in the capital on Tuesday welcomed the verdict and demanded immediate executing of the death sentence after completion of all legal procedures.
They observed that with the verdict justice was ensured and conspiracies hatched by Jamaat-Shibir internationally expending a huge amount of money to save the war criminal were foiled.
AL joint general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif, talking to reporters at his Karwan Bazaar office, said the Awami League was satisfied with the verdict of the Appellate Division.
Dhaka city AL acting general secretary Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya, addressing the rally on Bangabandhu Avenue, said that Jamaat-Shibir invested a huge amount to foil the trial of Mir Quasem but they failed due to the Awami League government in power.
Leaders and activist of Ganajagaran Mancha started to gather at the Shahbagh intersection since Tuesday morning awaiting the verdict.
As soon as the court’s decision reached the spot, they burst into joy. Slogans were chanted while many were seen hugging their near and dear ones.
The platform spokesperson, Imran H Sarkar, said, ‘Justice has been established and people’s demand has been met.’
New Age Correspondent at Rajshahi University reported that education minister Nurul Islam Nahid on Tuesday said that there was no possibility to forgive war criminals and their trails would continue.
‘No amnesty is possible for people suspected of committing war crimes, as they could not accept Bangladesh as their country till now. Rather, they are still opposing and plotting against our country’, he said.
He made the remarks while addressing a founding anniversary programme of Varendra Universtiy, first private university in Rajshahi.
International War Crimes Mass Trial Movement welcomed verdict upholding the death sentence for Mir Quasem.
International War Crimes Mass Trial Movement convener Shahjahan Khan, also the minister for shipping, on Tuesday thanked the judiciary on behalf of the movement.
Communist Party of Bangladesh also expressed satisfaction over the verdict.
CPB president Mujahidul Islam Selim in a statement demanded the quick execution of the verdict.
Jatia Samajtantrik Dal faction president ASM Abdur Rob and general secretary Abdul Malek in a statement expressed satisfaction over the verdict.
They said that if the trial of war crimes was held just after liberation war, there would be nobody to protest against the trial.
Bangladesh Udichi Shilpigusti president Kamal Lohani and general secretary Prabir Sarder in a statement said that people’s expectation was fulfilled with the verdict.
New Age Correspondent in Chittagong reported that activists and leaders of Ganajagaran Mancha, Chittagong chapter also celebrated the verdict of the Appellate Division upholding the death sentence of former Al-Badr leader Mir Quasem Ali.
