Jamaat calls hartal for today

The Jamaat-e-Islami on Tuesday called a countrywide dawn-to-dusk general strike for today as the Appellate Division upheld the death sentence of condemned war crimes convict Mir Quasem Ali, a senior Jamaat leader.

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, headed by chief justice SK Sinha, on Tuesday morning upheld the death sentence of Mir Quasem Ali in its verdict in the appeal of Mir Quasem against the International Crimes Tribunal judgement that had sentenced him to death for crimes against humanity committed in Chittagong during the Liberation War in 1971.
‘In protest against the government’s conspiracy to murder Mir Quasem Ali and demanding his release, we announce a dawn-to-dusk general strike for March 9 across Bangladesh,’ reads the emailed release.
Activists of Jamaat and its student body Islami Chhatra Shibir clashed with police in the capital’s Moghbazar area, where Jamaat’s central office was located, soon after the Supreme Court verdict.
Seven or eight Jamaat men were injured in the clash, said a release of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
